Snowboarding Tips For Safer Fun

Snowboarding is inherently a dangerous sport. And if safety precautions are not followed, you can become injured or worse. But there are some general tips that you can follow to make the sport safer.

First, you should not attempt to snowboard in areas that exceed your skill level. For example, many extreme snowboarders think nothing of snow boarding down near vertical slopes. But, for the beginner or intermediate snowboarder, this is just asking for trouble. Start on mildly graduated slopes and gradually increase the difficulty of the areas where you snowboard as you gain confidence and skill.

Always snowboard with a friend. Snowboarding in pairs or groups is more fun than doing it alone. In addition, the buddy system is a great tradition that has worked well for years for skiers and it will do the same for you. The purpose of the buddy system is simply to ensure that someone is nearby to offer help if you were to become injured or otherwise incapacitated. When participating in extreme sports, you should consider this a mandatory requirement. It also helps if your buddy is the same or a little more experienced than you. This way, neither of you is holding the other back in your enjoyment of the sport.

Get in shape before hitting the slopes. Snowboarding is an extremely exhilarating sport. In fact, it is so exhilarating that you can easily get an adrenaline rush that may cause you to attempt much more difficult tricks than your body is capable of. There are many exercises that you can use to get yourself into shape before the ski and snowboard season begins. Being in shape means that you are less likely to get out of control. It also means that you have much less chance of injuring yourself once you get on the range.

Stay on the marked trails. Thousands of injuries occur every year from mavericks veering off the marked trails and into ungroomed areas on the mountain. Once you leave the groomed trails, two of the main dangers is the possibility of slamming into a tree or falling into a tree well.

Proper safety equipment is a must. Wrist injuries are, by far, the most prevalent injury suffered by snowboarders. They account for almost a quarter of all injuries. Head injuries and concussion are the next most. So, a good wrist guard and well fitting helmet should be mandatory pieces of clothing.
